Wereldhavendagen May 23, 2011
Every year in September you can enjoy the "Wereldhavendagen" for a whole weekend in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

These days gives you a good view about the work and life in one of the biggest harbors of this world.

I can advise everyone who stays that period in or around Rotterdam to visit this event.

Wereldhavendagen, great to see a worldport from up close. Aug 29, 2010
Wereldhavendagen, or Worldportdays is a 3-day event held every september offering an inside view of everything happening in the Rotterdam port area. This year it's held on 3-4-5 september.

For over 30 years Rotterdam had the largest port in the world, currently it's the 3rd, but still by far the largest in Europe, and the largest one in the world when it comes to oil. Over half the cargo consists of the 'black gold'.

During the worldportdays many companies will open their doors to show everyone interested what they actually do. Ofcourse you can visit the different container terminals, ore terminals, oil terminals, but also customs, the ferries to the UK, tours in the dark for some unique photos, boat tours or a tour by steamtrain through the portarea. Other things are a visit to the pilots, radarcontrol centers, inside a cartunnel built under some of the ports, the cellar underneath one of Netherland's biggest bridges or visit a huge dredgingship to keep the ports up to depth. Or just watch some Royal Navy demonstrations.

All bus- and boattours start from the 'Kop van Zuid', just outside the city center in front of the famous Hotel New York, the former Holland-America Line headquarters. Your tourguide will be someone actually working in the portarea, for example when I visited the ECT Containerterminal last year our guide was a truckdriver who had been coming there for years to pick up containers. Ofcourse he could tell everything about the terminal, but also about the factories and so along the way to get there.

Reservations can be made through the website, or ofcourse from the 'travelagency' near the startingpoint of the tours. Most tours are 3,50 or 5,50 each, for exact dates, times and prices check the website: www.wereldhavendagen.nl
