Wentworth by the Sea A Marriott Hotel & Spa New Castle Reviews
Quiet resort on the NH coast Aug 28, 2010
Just a few minutes outside of Portsmouth is a small island with an estate feel. Wentworth by the Sea is a hotel operated by Mariot but has a feel that it is an independantly owned old New England hotel. You don't see any of the chain hotel branding.
The first thing you see driving up is a pristine golf course and clubhouse that comes right to the water's edge in the harbor. As you drive closer you see an old colonial looking hotel perched up on a hill over the same harbor which is the hotel's main building. The buildings are all done in white with red roofs. There is plenty of parking and a carriage way to pull up and unload. The main building has the normal rooms while a side building contains the suites where I stayed.
The suites have a private pool for the dozen or so suites all of which have 2 private balconies overlooking the marina in the harbor and the swimming pool. The suites are full on apartments with full kitchens 2 ensuite bedrooms over 2 floors with the master bedroom upstairs having a private balcony. Room service will bring a full breakfast into your room to enjoy overlooking the marina.
The marina ia a large multi-pier docking area for boats ranging from small mono-hulls to luxury 100+ foot yachts which makes for interesting people watching. There is a bar adjacent to the suites also overlooking the marina which is good for sundowners but does close very early (9pm I think it was. The staff didn't really know their own cocktail menu and couldn't make half the drinks due to lack of ingredients which wasn't impressive.
The dining room in the hotel is expensive and I didn't feel like the quality of the food or the service meritted such a high price. The room itself is elegantly decorated with fine art, high ceilings and ornate columns.
Unfortunately for the dining experience it seemed to me more of a case of luring in a captive audience than catering to the luxury that the hotel is trying to portray. I felt the staff in genersl were young and inexperienced in hospitality which was a disapointment given the hotel is a gorgeous property with lots of potential.
The suite was extremely nice and I'd have been happy to never have entered the main building, but at the prices (500+ per night) I expect more out of the facilities and the staff. This place is definitely worth a stop in for a drink if you're not staying there to see the harbor and the marina otherwise I think you can find cheaper and better value lodging in Portsmouth itself with better entertainment at your doorstep.
