Wells Overview

Wells is a summer resort of about 9600 located along US Highway near the Maine Turnpike along the Maine Coast, and one of the oldest towns in Maine. Originally it was a farming community; however tourism is the main economic driver to date. Wells is not far south of Kennebunkport and not far north of the New Hampshire border. They bill themselves as "The Friendliest Town in Maine" and the locals I met were very nice. The Abenaki Indians inhabited the are for many years before settlers came here from England in the 1620s. The town of Wells was incorporated in 1653, and was named after Wells, England. Maine is known for its rocky and jagged coast line, but in southern Maine the beaches are sandy. Because of this Wells is popular among beach goers in Maine.
