Wellington Downtown Backpackers Reviews
Busy backpackers in a vibrant capital Jan 14, 2011
Wellington Downtown Backpackers, situated in the Historic Hotel Waterloo, is located just a stone's throw (about a one minute's walk) away from the central railway station and the Bluebridge Ferry Terminals. This location is ideal for travellers from near and far. Besides other tourist attractions like the Beehive, the Parliament and the Te Papa, and amenities such as cafés, restaurants and the waterfront are within reach.
Another great plus of this huge hostel is the 24h reception so you can check in/check out whenever you like. The check-in itself is a quite quick and uncomplicated procedure thanks to the friendly and attentive staff at the desk. Just have a picture ID and NZ$20.00 cash as deposit for the room key (get the refund when checking out) to hand, and a bed for a proper rest is yours.
There are all different room types available so you can either book a single or double room (standard or superior), small shared rooms or larger dorms (up to 20 beds). There are also female only dorms available.
The rooms are adequate provided with (bunk)beds (free linen and blanket, so you don't need a sleeping bag) and reading lamps at each headboard, a wardrobe with clothes hangers, a desk and a chair, and an own private bathroom, which you don't have to share with everybody but only with your room mates.
Those single/double superior rooms have even more amenities like TV or coffee making facilities available.
A large kitchen provides all utensils you need for self-subsistence and is apart from the TV/Internet lounge a great place to catch up with other travellers and share experiences and a good bite.
Besides there are laundry facilities, a travel desk with heaps of brochures and maps, and a bar. By the way, along with your room key you receive a 'drink 3, pay 2' voucher for the on-site bar.
I stayed at Downtown Backpackers twice (once in a four bed dorm, once in a six bed dorm) and there were no major complaints to make.
The rooms were clean and tidy even though not immaculate as they could have possibly been, the staff was nice and helpful, an extensive feeling of security definitely existed, and the location was perfect for my purpose. But if you prefer a quiet and peaceful hostel to stay at, this backpackers might not be the completely right place 'cause you definitely hear traffic noises (which comes naturally given the fact of a location in the city).
Since Wellington Downtown is a backpackers be aware that you have to bring both your own food for the main courses (even though you can also order a breakfast for NZ$8.00), and any toiletries.
All in all Wellington Downtown Backpackers is a neat place to stay with the advantage of quick access to public transportation and tourist attractions, and an around the clock service at the reception.
