Beautiful Aug 18, 2008
We were going to take the cable car from Lambton Quay,to the top of the gardens but the cable cars were closed for maintenance. We went to the top by taxi instead. From there we walked to the Lady Norwood Rose Garden where there is a tea house. A beautiful place to sit and enjoy the surroundings. So many roses! There is also the Peace Flame Garden which contains the preserved fires from the atomic holocaust at Hiroshima.
We only saw a small part of the gardens but would love to see the rest one day. I am therefore only going to mention the bits that I saw. The Begonia House, Shop and Garden Cafe is self explanitory. As we kept walking toward the city we were surprised to find a cemetry. Apparently, Bolton St., Memorial Park. The land was set aside in 1840 and for 50 years it was administered as three seperate cemetries - Church of England, Jewish and public. It was closed in 1892 except for new burials on existing family plots. It was then closed to the public from 1968 to 1971. About 3,700 burials were exhumed to allow construction for the urban motorway. Most of the remains now lie in a large vault beneath the Early Settlers Memorial Lawn situated behind the chapel which is open daily 10a.m. to 4p.m. I found this to be an extrodinary thing to find while walking through a botanical garden. |

Wellington has a nice Botanic Garden. (Yes, again a Botanic Garden!!!). A (red) cable car takes you up to the hilltop of the gardens. It's an easy walk down through the Garden. Here I realized that also even in New Zealand I have hayfever. :(
Another walk I've done… Wellington ...... Great atmosphere in |

Botanical gardens, cable car museum, Te Papa museum, and Parliament tours all have one thing in common- they are free. For a look into culture and history the Te Papa museum gives you a look at the Maori people and the Kiwi way of life… Windy Wellington |

) I then made my way down into the city centre through the Botanic Gardens and Public Cemetery, stopping of at a Starbucks for a Zen green tea on my way to the hostel. At the hostel I made something to eat and watched the TV - 'America’s Got Talent' (I’d like to disagree after watching this… A wet and windy Wellington! |

I also went to the Sea Museum & jumped on the cable car to check out the botanic gardens. Very impressed by it all so far. Very much a tourist with my mouth open all the time.
My day backpack is now filled with Wellington to do brochures - having to sort these out at the moment. I've already filled up 144MB… Earthquake!! |

We walked down through the Botanical gardens, as far as the Rose garden, where we had been yesterday. Time for a cuppa. So nice here. Then we set off on the rest of the walk. Heading towards the city, still in the gardens, there was an old cemetry. Ironic really… Our last day in Wellington |
