Weinprobierstand Eltville Reviews
Aug 03, 2006
People often wonder why I spend so much time in Germany - aside from the obvious family connection it's places like this that make it such a wonderful country to visit!
Eltville's wine stand is located down by the river at the end of a picturesque promenade, overlooked by the castle and the well tended rose gardens. On first glance there's not really much there - it's a simple wooden hut surrounded by a few chairs and a series of picnic style tables in the open air. What it does offer however is the opportunity to unwind completely.
With the tables covered in a thick roof of leaves from the surrounding trees they afford a fantastic view of the Rhein which means you can sit and sip bottles of the local wine and watch the ships and barges trundling up and down the river in front of you. Later on as it goes dark the area is lit up by strings of lights woven into the branches of trees which bathe the scene in a soft glow.
The stand is shared amongst the local vineyards who promote their wares there in rotation throughout the summer months at very reasonable prices - when we were there a nice bottle of Riesling would only set you back about seven euro which reasonable any day of the week.
The stand opens at four on weekdays, earlier on weekends and holidays and is a very popular haunt with a sizable crowd seeming to gather as the day goes on, getting quite lively by the end of the evening at weekends with a mixture of locals and tourists. Closing time is around eleven but they seemed happy to stay on into the evening if there was enough demand.
There's a small selection of food (pretzels, cheese etc) to keep you going as you're drinking but a guy did turn up a few times when we were there selling huge, warm pretzels covered in cheese for something like one euro a time. Be warned there’s no toilets - but there are some public ones at the castle which is a couple of minutes walk away.
