Wein am Romer Frankfurt am Main Reviews
Jun 15, 2007
It does what it says on the tin.
Wein am Romer is a tiny bar located round the back of the Cathedral and serves up exactly what you'd expect - wine and plenty of it. Don't be fooled by its size or it's somewhat kitsch décor - this is an excellent place to sit and watch real locals in action.
This place really is tiny – little bigger than a corner shop with a small counter in one corner and five high bar tables with stools crammed in in front of it. The walls are covered in a mixture of trinkets, photos of old Frankfurt (before most of it disappeared in the war) and of course bottles of wine. The furnishings consist mainly of traditional dark stained wood that only adds to the ambience.
The drinks list is varied and reasonably priced – varied if you like wine that is as they serve little else. Food is limited to bar snacks but then again their cheese and pretzels are the ideal accompaniment to a glass of red or two.
The clientele are generally an older crowd and everyone seemed to know everyone else. They weren't adverse to knocking back a bottle or two and after a while some of the regulars can become quite, shall we say, tipsy.
During the summer months there extra tables placed outside which affords extra room for the customers but if you're sat inside be prepared to be a bit up close and cosy with your fellow drinkers.
And if you do happen to bring along a cat don't expect to be able to twirl it merrily around your head by it's tail.
And did I mention it's small...?
