Waterford, like the rest of Ireland, is expanding and developing rapidly. It tends to be a dismally grey downtown, punctuated by a few bars and hotels. Of course, the Waterford Crystal Factory is by far the largest tourist destination there. The factory tour is interesting, but pretty much what you expect for a glass blowing factory tour. Nonetheless, you do see a good deal about the crystal making, a short film, and then of course, the gift shop. Beware, the prices and goods are the same as you can get anywhere.

Aside from the smallish downtown (not worth any real tourism stop) the rest of the area is rapidly developing farmland. A few gentleman farms still dot the area, and there is great country living heading out to the sea.

Waterford in a southeast hub, and can be visited in a half day en route to other southern Irish locales as you make your sweep around the southern loop of Ireland. Ireland is such a beautiful country, and it is easy for any English speaker to visit. With the recent Irish economic boom the people have become accustomed to international tourists - and even very many African and Indian immigrants. With the ease of modern air transport to Dublin or Shannon, there is no reason for anyone to put off a trip there.

Bristol to Waterford

Up about 6am and shower, dress and pack to move on. Breakfast in nothing special, but the coffee was good. Off to Cardiff where we stop about 9:45am for an hour stop. Our tour director didn't even mention the Castle almost across the street. We could see the wall, with a nice garden on this side, but had no idea it was there. We continued along southern Wales coastline to Fishguard where we waited for nearly an hour and a half to board the ferry.  The three and a half hour voyage ...

from Wexford to Waterford (to visit the Waterford Crystal Factory)

From Wexford, I caught the 1:25pm coach to the town of Waterford.  Arriving around 3:00, I sat for a moment in John Roberts Square to eat an orange and plot my next move.  I then hopped a city bus, which took me around town past the concrete telephone poles and modest townhouses en route to the Waterford Crystal Factory‎ (established 1771).   On the tour of the factory, I witnessed master blowers and engravers performing their crafts.  We admired several eye-catching c...

Two week trip to Ireland with Ryan (foolz0r) and Dave (Dave). Lots of rain, Guinness, and green. We also went to the first ever international TravBuddy get-together in Bunratty. Under construction: more photos and blogs coming soon!

We spent the night in Waterford, and on our way to Cork the next day, we of course had to make a stop off at the crystal factory.  Apparently my my mother was deprived on all of our previous trips to Venice, etc., because clearly Waterford crystal is made in a very different fashion than, say, Morano glass.  Sigh.  See review for more info.
