A nice piece of civil engineering! Apr 08, 2013
Saint Petersburg lies on the end of the Gulf of Finland. When there is high water and a western wind all the water of the Gulf will go to Saint Petersburg. To protect the city for flooding they build a big water defence systems a few kilometer in front of the city.

You can visit this water defence system with a guide and so you can see the total system. The water defence system consist of several parts. There is a piece which is totally closed, so no water can go from Saint Petersburg to the Gulf of Finland and the other way around. There are also parts which will be opened at normal circumstances and will be closed when there is high water in combination with a Western wind. And at least there are also places where shipping is still possible, so the harbour of Saint Petersburg is still attainable.

In the info center at the middle of the water defence you can see a good overview of the total system. There are also a lot of photos from the construction period.
