Like the show done in Hanoi, in one of this Municipal Theatre, HCMC also has a similar show, in a smaller scale. It's basically a show of puppets on a stage filled with water. The puppet was moved using a long stick by somebody behind the stage, and the water is used to cover this stick so that seems the puppet is moving by itself.
All the shows are in Vietnamese, but you can understand it from the brochure they gave away when you bought the ticket. The show is every day on 6.30 pm and 8.30pm. There are several stages having this kind of show, but probably in HCMC the most famous one is in Nguyen Thi Minh Kai street 55B. The show is very informative, about daily life of Vietnamese, working either as fisherman, farmer, or dancer. Plus additional feature of king and royal family, kids playing around, and daily conversation in a rural area. The show ended with all the 8 men working hard moving the puppet behind the stage, appear and bow for all the audiences. The ticket cost about 65,000 VND (4 USD) per person. There is a discount if you comes in group, but why bothering yourself coming as a group when you can just take a taxi and go to the theatre on your own. |

I was early and spent some time looking around at the local fair with rides, shooting galleries and displays of massaging chairs and such and watching some teenagers at a modern dance school practising. The wooden puppets are great, beautiful and colourful… Saigon |

Went to see water puppets which were totally worth the 2 quid. It was so cool… Blood, Sweat and Tears |

On a much lighter note we were given a couple of free tickets to the Water Puppet theatre by the super friendly lady who runs the hotel we are staying in (Guesthouse 70). We almost certainly wouldn't have bothered going if the tickets were free thinking it would be a bit rubbish. It was actually excellant and very skillful… Ho Chi Minh City |
