Water Cays Utila Reviews
Water Cays Jan 08, 2012
Beauty is in the eye of beholder, but this place is really nice. Right next to Utila island there are dozen of smaller islands/cays. Main cay is called Cayan and very tightly populated with around 600 fishermen all year around. There are few rudimentary restaurants on the island with mostly excellent fresh fish. Few islands have house or two, and rest cays have only palms, beach and birds (no I did not forget sand flees, but they are not that bad)
You can get there with boat from Utila, but you should make a deal with the captain to come back for you if you don't want to swim back. Lots of people camp on one larger cay called Pigeon Cay, and it costs 50 lempira per day/person (local owner enforces this charge, to clean the place, and collect firewood that you can use). Lots of shallow coral is great for snorkeling, but serious diving sites are not far away either if you have equipment.
People are very friendly, talkative and nice.
There are couple of cays with houses for rent that are very cheep (around 160$ - 200$ per day for a house) considering that you get whole island for yourself. For 160$ you can get a house that has 14 beds, power and refrigeration, and that is a excellent deal if you go with lots of friends.
