Wat Thmei

Siem Reap, Cambodia
Wat Thmei - The monastery is home to many monks - and several may be keen to practice their language skills with you.
Wat Thmei - Inside the stupa. A sad reminder of the region's recent past. Come here to remember and honour those who were lost.
Wat Thmei - This photo was taken during New Year (mid April) so prayer flags and sand (for insence sticks) have been preapred.
Wat Thmei - I am privileged to know this man. He is the father of Savong who runs a school west of Siem Reap. Years ago he and a small group of locals collected the bones from the fields around here - to memorialise. That must have been the saddest of tasks.

Wat Thmei - Did you see what i see....
Wat Thmei - Maybe you should sit there and take a closer and longer look at how she is...

An unforgettable sight... Mar 13, 2011
It is not about how nice or beautiful the temple is that I am writing here...

It is about the LADY who is sitting along the stairway into the temple that deeply attracted my attention and stop my steps...

She is almost blind...

She has only a pair of legs...

and a small undeveloped arm...

She just sit there hoping for mercy from the tourist... and out of the buses and buses of tourists coming into the temple for sightseeing, there are hardly anyone who is willing to extend a helping hand...

Does it cost so much just to put a small note into her bowl... ?

We all know the super low pricing is a key attracting factor for tourist to visit Siem Reap...

and this lady is just sitting there under the hot sun, helpless and cant really see, hoping...

I can't help but to write this, not begging you but hoping that if you ever see this lady during your visit to Angkor Wat, please extend your charitable heart for once...
Maybe you should sit there and tak…

Killing Fields Monastery - Siem Reap Mar 23, 2011
Wat Thmei is the Killing Fields Monastery of Siem Reap. In the centre of the grounds is a stupa or monument with glass sides and it reveals bones and skulls collected by locals after the Pol Pot years. (Can you imagine what a sad job that must have been?) When I went there I was very moved, none the least by the fact that around me were neighbourhood children playing and laughing.

The monastery is quite large, and home to many monks who also look after young orphans.

When you're there (it is on the way out to Angkor Wat) there may be tour buses arriving with Japanese or Korean visitors, so the place isn't always a quiet spot to contemplate.

However the place is certainly worth a visit.
