Wastwater Wasdale Head Reviews
Delightful lake and source of great walks. Nov 12, 2010
One television programme had a vote in which Wastwater came top as 'favourite view' - well deserved I would say, although biggest, deepest favourite etc are not my scene generally.
Certainly Wastwater does not lie in the part of the English Lake District that is most easily approached from most of the country. Hence it can be assumed that those heading there are either going for a stroll around part of the lake, a picnic and relaxation or else for a pretty stiff walk into England's highest fells.
A little above the end of Wastwater, Wasdale Head is a major starting point not only for reaching Scafell Pike, the highest in England but also Scafell, Great Gable, usually a part of the 'favourite view, and the less known but very fine Pillar Group.
There is a road for the whole length of the lake and the contrst between the far side with its huge screes and the near one with incresing sized mountains to the left is very striking.
