Washington Dulles International Airport Reviews
Washington's Dulles Airport (IAD) May 10, 2010
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is the principal international and long-distance domestic airport serving the greater Washington, DC, region. The airport opened in 1962, but traffic growth was slow until the 1980s. The airport was named for John Foster Dulles, Secretary of State in the Eisenhower administration. Today, Dulles in the 21st busiest airport in the USA. Peak arrival and departure hours are in the morning and early evening.
The Main Terminal, representing an upswept wing, was designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen. The terminal was lengthened in the 1990s, but retained the original design elements. Today, the Main Terminal primarily houses ticket counters and baggage check-in, security control, baggage claim, and international arrivals and customs.
Most departure gates are located at the two Midfield Terminals. Passengers reach the Midfield Terminals via the AeroTrain peoplemover or via the iconic Dulles Mobile Lounges. (The Mobile Lounges were first intended to transport passenger from gates at the terminal out to aircraft waiting on the tarmac, but the idea proved impractical.) The Midfield Terminals also have restaurants, cocktail lounges, fast food, shops, and other passenger amenities.
Long-term parking at Dulles is $10 per day. Driving to the airport along the Dulles Access Highway remains the best transportation option. Airport buses will take passengers to the West Falls Church Metro station ($10 one-way to the Metro). (Airport buses do not travel into Washington, DC.) Taxis and Super Shuttle airport vans are available as are shuttles to nearby hotels and car rental. Washington Metro is building an extension to Dulles Airport. The Silver Line is expected to open in 2016.
