A thousand years of British history Jun 09, 2012
If you happen to be in or near the Midlands, UK then Warwick Castle should be on your list! It is very close to Stratford-upon-Avon so if you are coming to explore Shakespeare's homeplace, do this as well! I was lucky enough to get free entry to Warwick Castle when they ran an online offer. Generally if you check the website you can get some good money off deals. The history of the castle extends nearly 1100 years yet it is still a real, fully functioning castle; not ruins!! You learn about different periods of history which comes to life as you walk around the castle via interactive displays, as well as the usual information boards, and/or you can take tours around different parts with guides. Much of the interior of the castle, the stately rooms, Great Hall etc are maintained to look exactly as they did when the castle was occupied by the great nobles and royals of historic England so you really get a flavour of what it was like living there in medieval times. There are loads of other attractions and displays; if you time your visit well you might get to see some jousting, watch the trebuchet launch fireballs or see battle re-enactments. None of this was on when I visited but I still had a fantastic day out! I don't think I bought any food in there so cannot comment on this. Parking cost about £4 for the whole day, so on the whole a good value day out.

Welcome to Britain Ultimate Castle ! Jun 23, 2012
Britain's Ultimate Castle ! Quite a statement indeed !

I first visited Warwick Castle on a cold January afternoon and although I could appreciate the sheer size and medieval magnificence of the Castle, I saw virtually nothing of its grounds still under the spell of winter.

So when I revisited the place this year in late June, it was with a totally opened mind and I decided to walk to the Castle fron the town that bears its name.

Warwick is a pretty town filled with manicured gardens and picturesque black and white buildings which offers a nice selection of restaurants and tearooms.

I accessed the Castle from the Gate located just a stone thrown away from the High St through delightful back gardens in bloom and discovered the delightful Thomas Oken Tearoom, an old black & white building which serves a delicious blend of teas and homemade cakes in a tea set which would not be out of place in a novel of Lewis Caroll. A must when visiting Warwick

From the moment I was greeted by the flying standards of the Bear Tower Gate, entered the Central Courtyard where knights were fighting in armour, climbed to the top of the ramparts to have almost an aerial view of the Castle and its grounds, met the Victorians of the Royal Week-End recreation throughout the magnificent appartments, discovered the Art of Falconary with live eagles, entered the delightful Orangerie Gardens with their flying peacocks - I did not know until now that they could fly at all - not to forget the enormous Trebuchet Machine in action by the river, the water mill with its ingenious Victorian machinery and finally spent an hour in the exquisite Victorian Rose Garden discussing the cultivation of old roses, I can say with confidence that my visit to Warwick Castle was a pure enchantment.

Stepping back in time Feb 12, 2007
While visiting London in 2007, we went to Warwick Castle. I was excited to see this castle since it plays an important role during the War of the Roses between the Lancasters (Tudors) and Yorks (Plantegants). Warwick was nicknamed the "king maker." It was also mentioned numerous times in my favorite book about King Richard III called The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman.

The Tussauds bought the castle in the 80's (I think) and have added their own touches...mainly wax figures depicting life in a castle.

While we were there, they were doing sword demonstrations, so of course my husband, being a sword geek, struck up a conversation with the actors and had a great chat.

I would never thought of stepping my feet into a castle let alone explore in one. Warwick Castle has so much rich history and I was amazed how beautiful it is. I was able to climb the walls around the castle which overlooked the English town of Warwick. I felt like a time traveler, it was like I was living back in the 19th century.
