The other morning I was out for a walk and was surprised to see hundreds of colorfully decorated bears occupying the castle square here in Warsaw.     When I took a closer look I saw that there is one bear for each country in the world - decorated by an artist from that country - and they have been touring since 2002 and have visited cities on four continents so far.  Poland is the tenth country that they have visited.   The bears arrived in Warsaw on May 10th and...

We got up this am to go and meet with a local guide who was going to show us around Warsaw. When I first met her I wasn't sure what to expect, she put me in the mind of Rosie O'Donnell with a mouth to match, lol. I don't mean foul just loud which was wonderful because at no time throughout the day did I have to be right at her side; I heard her from everywhere. She was amazing, if people were interfering with what she wanted us to see she definitely let them know; at ...

I was planning on flying to Warsaw on Thursday March 1 but there were severe thunderstorms in the Midwest that day.   Besides that, my friends flight from Seattle to Chicago was delayed beyond making the connection to the LOT flight bound for Warsaw. I was going to Warsaw for the grand opening of the Hard Rock Cafe. I changed the date to Thursday March 16 and even though my friend could not make it this time, I went anyway.  The flights to Chicago that day were all look...

I came to Warsaw two years ago to study Korean Language and Culture at Warsaw University. In Lodz University we don't have such cool departments. At first I wasn't very happy because I'm not a huge Warsaw fan. Let's be honest. I think that most of Poles are not very into Warsaw. It's just a grey, poor city that is trying to be a great European capital. But it has also it's cool sides. For exampe: student's discounts or cheap tickets.  And the ability to meet a variety of people...

After our sightseeing we returned to our friends' home for lunch - Sauerbraten!  which was really delicious, and knudeln, potatoes, green beans, carrots...  After lunch Jürgen and Magda took us to the train station.  The Berlin Hauptbahnhof is one of the newest train stations in Europe and is really spectacular.  Mostly made of glass and metal, it is a multileveled station with shopping and restaurants.  Our train back to Warsaw arrived just on time and we were on ...

There was just enough time for a final walk around the neighbourhood I had been staying in before I headed to Warsaw airport.  Again, I felt a longing to stay in this country but unfortunately had to be back at work the following day.  I think the hardest part of going home was that I hadn't shared my experience with anyone & didn't know anyone who had the passion to travel except for to the beach!!  I found it was hard to envoke the excitement I felt about my trip in oth...

Postage Stamps   Postage Stamps are another kind of traveller, bearers of tidings from one country to the next, making their way across towns, states, countries and international borders, while carrying a small sample of the sender’s culture, heritage, political system or current events.  The use of the postage stamp as a miniature work of art in itself is relatively recent.     One artist who made a notable contribution to this was Friedensreich Hundertwasser, ...

Day 1 - Warsaw

So today I woke up in time to partake of the free breakfast included with the cost of my room... judging by the limited selection of stale cereal and instant coffee I had to choose from, I'm convinced that "free" translates to "shitty" in Polish when used to describe a meal.  After sucking down some stale cheerio-like cereal and a cup of insta-coffee I headed out to see some museums and such.  My first stop was at the Fryderyk Chopin museum.  Using my old UTSACard to score a st...

First Stop: Warsaw, Poland
posted by:
Sep 07, 2007 - Sep 18, 2007
The first stop of my 3-leg journey was Warsaw, Poland.  I used to live in Warsaw in 1997, while working for the startup mobile phone company Era GSM.  (I was in business school at Dartmouth College at the time, and working for Era GSM was my summer intership - arguably the best summer of my life.) So 2007 marked my 10-year anniversary.  I had to go back to visit Warsaw, and more importantly to see some old friends, including a dear ex-girlfriend (now mar...
