Warren Vacation Guide
Warren is a great place to vist. It is about half way between Providence and Newport. As early as 1632, a trading post was established at Sowams by the Plymouth settlers. At a very early date, the inhabitants of Warren began to engage in maritime pursuits. By 1760 the town was well known as a whaling port, and ship-building became an important industry. The Revolutionary War seriously affected Warren\'s commercial prosperity, and the town suffered British raids in 1778 along with the rest of the region.
A large part of the town is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as the Warren Waterfront Historic District, covering more than half of a square mile and more than 300 buildings. Antiquing is now a major draw for tourists and residents alike, in small shops along Water Street, Main and Child streets, and along side streets in the downtown area. The Warren River borders the historic downtown area and is home to the Vista Jubilee and Bay Queen excursion boats, Blount Shipyard and Blount Seafood.
Must sees:
Warren Baptist Church circa 1844 replacing an earlier structure which burned in 1778(the bell was cast by Paul Revere)
First United Methodist Church circa 1789(First Methodist church in the state of Rhode Island)
Maxwell House circa 1752(Colonial gable house where 18th century crafts are demonstrated)
Delekta\'s Pharmacy
