Profoundly moving and touching Mar 18, 2010
The War Remnants Museum charts the developments that occurred during the Vietnam War, especially during the American phase. I think the previous names of the museum (including “The House for Displaying War Crimes of American Imperialism and the Puppet Government” and the “Museum of American War Crimes”) reflected the anti-American feeling of the nation and its subsequent renaming shows how the relations between Vietnam and the US are considerably better. The museum offers a harrowing depiction of what happened to prisoners and covers events such as the My Lai massacres. In short, I’d rather forget what I saw there, as the films and pictures and information and powerful exhibits conjure up very vivid images. It takes very little imagination to understand the horrors that the people endured, and is incredibly moving. Still, the museum is poignant and inspiring nonetheless. It is a powerful tribute to the bravery and courage of the Vietnamese, and a significant chapter in their history. The museum more importantly serves as an important consideration about the human costs involved with such political events. The visit was heartbreaking but I’m very pleased I went there. Absolutely essential viewing for anyone going to HCMC.
