Today was another of those days that I had planned for what seemed forever. We had been talking about going out west for a year and I had spent the better part of that year on every website I could find, looking through every travel book I could find and then getting back on the websites. Planning …

If you have ever driven across South Dakota, you know you cannot miss the multitude of signs advertising Wall Drug. They started by advertising free ice water for travelers, and built it up from there. It has grown into it's own phenomena, a cheesy tourist trap for sure, but well …

The town of Wall is about an hour east of Rapid City, South Dakota on I-90. It reminds me of an old frontier town. It is a tourist trap but there is a lot of things to see and do. A great break from the driving. Also it's at the begining of Hwy 240 the Badlands National Park Loop Road.

Pictures from Wall Drug, the backyard and Wounded Knee Museum. Quotes for the day:
Suzi(aditu): "Where did you get that luggage tag?" (It has Alaska on it)
Kerry: Alaska, perhaps :)
Suzi: "There are monsters (children) everywhere!"

After the episode of the night before, we were ready to get the heck out of Badlands National Park. Our first sign of wildlife was waiting to strike from the ground, impeding our path to the bathroom in the morning. About a 5 or 6 foot long snake (I don't know snakes...but it didn't loo…

The Badlands begin 35 miles east of Wall South Dakota. The Badlands sneak up on you; in seconds the ocean of prairie is transformed into a jumbled wilderness. The Badlands are a wonder of bizarre, colorful spires and pinnacles, massive buttes and deep gorges. Pictures can only hint at this scene.
From The Badlands we headed to Palmer Gulch KOA at Mr. Rushmore.

Maryland to Utah, saw the stuff to see in South Dakota. Actually no, there is a lot more to see than I did, but I was low on time/money. I'll do it again eventually...

( Never once mentioned she had a deal for me, definitely not a smooth talker, not a fast talking used car salesperson.)I booke…

All it cost us was $90 and a lot of attitude for the desk clerk but we were able to get a bed for the night at the Econo Lodge in Wall South Dakota.

Besides travelling the world, I also believe that the place you call home can hold some of the most expectacular beauty if you know where to look. This is the case with the US, 50 states with as much to offer as any country in the world. East coast to west coast, north to south, it is as different as night and day each with their own unique culture. There's something for everyone here! I offer you a very small peak of my incredible journey through this land I call home!

Tegen lunchtijd stopt…

Three days after I graduated UGA I hit the road with 600 pounds of stuff in my car and started my adventure in the Army. First stop was Seattle, WA and I took 7 days to drive there. I also took the long way and enjoyed my days alone on the road across the US.

Up at dawn, van housekeeping and another 9 hrs. & 550 miles on the road. Iowa had us talking about the awesome expanse of farms and endless crops. Hay bales looked like orphans in the field. South Dakota started with the same but morphed into a vast prairie; we felt like a dot in an ocean of land. In a blink of an eye, unbelievable earthen dunes appeared followed by an oasis. Wall SD and its Badlands were a serendipitous stop; an unexpected yet great addition to our adventure.
