We walked everywhere, even at night. I would just suggest not taking any dark streets and walk with another person, but that is just common sense. It really depends on where you stay though. We stayed in the city, so everything was really within walking distance.

Entrance to the Basilica is free,
so we walked in. It was an amazing experience; nobody was there except for us
and a couple other people. We got a clear view of everything including the
pieta. We saw several small services going on in different languages. Priests
and nuns kept walking to and fro.

A few hundred meters away was the Vatican and from here we walked through a tunnel toward the Tiber (the main river in Rome ). We crossed the river at the Ponte Principe Amedeo.
At the other side of the river we bought a good map of Rome and also bought some extra water and then we walked… Rome dag 1 // Rome day 1 |

We walked around the courtyard for a while and I was quite amused by the fresh water drinking fountains, which have been around since Ancient Rome.
Our next stop was the Vatican Museum, to see the Sistine Chapel. We walked through several nicely landscaped court yards… Trip to Rome |

After enjoying the scenery here and having the usual pictures taken, we walked down Via Del Condotti with all its fashion shops; we walked in to some of the shops and looked at the things but continued almost down to the end of the street where we knew that there was a shop where we could get some… Not even crooks and hustlers could stop us |

We were walking through hallways that were covered in beautiful artwork. I walked by a rug that had Jesus on it, as you walked by Jesus' eyes followed you. It seemed like it was the hallway was never going to end, and then finally we walked… Day 3 |
