Wakkanai is a small city at the north tip of Hokkaido. The city is a transfer city to and from the islands of Rishiri and Rebun. Wakkanai’s main industries include tourism and fishing.

The city has two onsens (hot springs), a seal watching spot, and a couple of monuments. During the winter, the city hosts the Japan National Cup Dog Sled Races. Wakkanai is quiet town that is pleasant during the summer and cold during the winter.

I spent six days in Hokkaido, the north island in Japan. I visited the city of Hakodate, which is famous for the view from the top of the local mountain and for having a colonial influence. I also visited the small island of Rishiri in north Hokkaido. The island is famous for hiking trails and for Rishiri-zan, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains.
