Historically and culturally important Oct 07, 2011
The overall rating relates to Wakefield Metropolitan Borough, rather than the city itself. Until recently I should have been pushed to give the city more than 2 stars for anything to attract visitors but this year there has been the opening of The Hepworth, one of the largest galleries in the country outside of London. This would raise it to 4! Some of Barbara Hepworths on display have not been shown before and there is one room devoted to her patterns.
This gallery is near to Wakefield Kirkgate station but I heartily advise any visitors to avoid what I find one of the worst stations I know and get the free bus from Wakefield Westgate. I can only recommend motorists to follow the signs for the gallery.
Other than this, the only things likely to appeal to visitors are the Cathedral, built as a church and by no means one of our most impressive, and the Chantry Chapel, dating from the 11th century but showing little now of ancient background.
This is surprising as Wakefield has an impressive history as a Bishopric and in local government terms. it was county town of the long established West Riding and the expensive hall became the centre of the short-lived West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council.
Outside the city are at least two places of major note, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (separately reviewed) and Nostell Priory.
The Sculpture Park and The Wakefield together make it a stunning venue for anybody interested in sculpture
