Waitangi Overview

Waitangi surrounded by the Waitangi National Reserve is located close to the Bay of Islands in the north of New Zealand’s North Island.

This is one of the country’s most historical places ever because Waitangi is seen as the place where the modern bicultural society New Zealand’s was born.

On the 6th February in 1840 Maori chiefs from all over the country and British men came together and signed the ‘Treaty of Waitangi’ that gave the British crown the power over New Zealand and the Maori equality to the British people.

The Visitor Centre and the Waitangi Treaty House (museum) are interesting and well visited institutions.
