Waikiki Beachside Hostel Oct 02, 2016
Waikiki Beachside Hostel has a location…

I mean it is located one block from the beach, at the end of Waikiki, with a bit less of tourist crowds, and beaches that are not overrun. But, the thing is that it is really located in the gutters… in the back street, right behind some hotels and restaurants, the street where all trash gets collected and stored… STINKS, dirty and filthy.

Hostel is placed in three identical buildings, boxed four floor reminiscences of ugly architecture from the 70’s. Street is easy to remember because it is not a Hawaiian name, so Lemon St. is pretty easy to come back to. Bus stops are two blocks away and it is fairly easy to go anywhere. One way is 2.50$ and it is the same for any distance. It is very easy to get to and from the airport and you have choice of bus #19 and #20.

I don’t even know why I came here because their main thing was that they offer FREE linen… Is it ok to curse on this site? Oh well, s***** m***** f******! Anyway, reception is in the last building and they give you linen and bracelet that opens the door. That is actually cool thing because this bracelet is waterproof and easy to have with you no matter where you are. Very convenient.

Now, for the price of $40 per night in 8 person dorm you would expect them to give you a towel, but NO, that is additional moneys, and they sell it to you, not like you have to deposit something and return the towel. They also have lockers that you actually have to operate with quarters… That’s just fantastic for me, I mean the little things that they have in order to squeeze any money from people that stay here.

Bottom floors used to be a parking area that is now a bit of “common area” with TV and some coin operated machines. Also, there is some kind of “life coach” road to happiness BS library that simply does not have a place in hostel. If you have car, you can park it under one part of the building for $10 per day, which is not that bad. They have “breakfast” in the morning that is simply pathetic.

I got the room on the fourth floor which is nice because you have the least of the human traffic and lots of nice breeze. There are some weird people staying in this place. At least half population are temporary workers or people looking for work in the city. Some of them are borderline homeless with all behavior that does not make anybody’s stay nice and pleasant.

Dorms are classic apartments with bunk beds added in living room and the other room. Each place has a restroom and kitchen. Kitchen in the room is not a good idea because of the smells and mess that travelers make in those areas. Adding the table in the kitchen / living area just took lots of free space instead of doing anything positive. Bathroom is alright and it has hot water.

All in all it was bad experience, some of the lowest level service for the highest prices I have seen. Simply idiotic. Not recommended for anything.

I noticed that most of the hostels in the US suck.
In 2013, this hostel was charging $21/night (see the review below) and the price doubled after 3 years.
A kitchen in the bedroom is a very bad idea. They should have a common kitchen somewhere else.

Excellent located hostel in Waikiki beach Oct 22, 2013
Good hostel. I was sleeping in a mixed dorm room for 8 people for 3 days. Bed is comfortable and room was clean. Fresh linen included; towels are rented. Air conditioning in rooms!! Free wifi (working properly) and breakfast are included (coffee, tea and toasts). The price was 21 dollars/night. Very convenient location in Waikiki beach. Noisy because there are many bars around open until late. Shuttle service between hostel and airport for 12 dollars.
