Fun and pricey hotel Jul 17, 2011
This hotel is located close to Moscone Center, which is San Francisco's convention center. It is also close to Yerba Buena Gardens, SFMOMA, Market Street, lots of shopping, geat restaurants, the cable cars, Union Square, Mission Street and SOMA. So, it's pretty well located in terms of being near lots of fun activities to do in SF.

I go here each year for business as it's very close to Moscone. I have had mixed feelings about this hotel through the years. It's definitely geared towards the "hip" crowd, or wanting to be hip, but I think it's fair to say there's a little of both there. The interior is dimly lit everywhere, which when I first encountered really bothered me. I couldn't see where I was going, and it was hard to find where to insert my key card. Annoying, I thought. But now I've grown to like the nightclub vibe/feel they have throughtout the hotel and rather enjoy it.

When you enter the lobby, there's usually some sort of "vibey" music going on, more mellow during the day, and then much more "night clubby" at night.

There is a nice fire place in the entrance to the right, with cute square seats to sit on around it. They have a small lounge area also with couches, and a bar in the entrance with seating for food and drinks. This turns into a complete night club feeling at night, especially around 11 pm when it's at an all time high pitch. It's fun. The crowd is definitely full of beautiful, interesting(artistically and fashionably) people, as well as the normal business crowd. But overall, everyone is very nice, the staff and the crowd. No pretentiousness to be found anywhere really.

They have an Acura car that you can reserve beforehand if you want to be driven somewhere and they do if for free - just tip the guy. We used it twice and were very happy. The limit in the car is six people though, take note.

The staff were all wonderful. They are always helpful, friendly, efficient and prompt. And when they are not, they are completely apologetic and nice. I never had any problems waiting, but I take into account time just in case I do have to wait.

The gym is nice, and connected to the pool/hot tub area. The pool is indoors, a must for SF, and is nice. It has lounge chairs, and they provide towels for you there. Just take yourself!

Currently they are under construction, so the XYZ restaurant is closed, as is the entryway from the valet parking to the hotel. It slated to be finished later this year...? Just something to note.

I agree with Kevin about the lit Buddha - very annoying. It glows in these various shades of color, and it's not even pretty or meditative. However, there IS a light switch you can turn off, and as soon as I got in, it turned it off for the rest of my stay. It's a cute idea, but not executed well.

Parking is expensive at the hotel. If you need more affordable overnight/all day parking, go down to Mission St. and Fourth to Mission Parking. It's less expensive per night and you can stay there long term.

If you're not going to stay here at all, go to the bar/restaurant they have in the entrance to meet for drinks/snacks. It's a fun place to hang out and chill.

The Dubs May 10, 2010
Like all W hotels, the W San Francisco is very modern and geared towards the 35 and under crowd. This was one of the first W's to open, and it's been around for over ten years now. Ask for a higher floor at check in, they'll give it to you if it's available and that way you get a view of the city. The lobby (or "living room" as they call it) was really cool. The XYZ bar has it's own entrance from the street and is a fun place to party for a short time before it becomes overwhelming. It's filled with a bunch of 25-year-olds (and some older ones trying to pull off 25) who all think they're better than each other. Drinks are overpriced. The room itself was starting to show some signs of aging but it was still nice. Kind of small, but to be expected for a downtown location. It had some strange decorations; one thing that really pissed me off was this light-up buddha sitting on a shelf in the room. There was no on/off switch so it was on all night switching to all the colors of the rainbow. Bad call on the hotel decorators' behalf. The Bliss products in the bathroom were perfect as always. The indoor WET pool was very nice. It's the only indoor pool I've seen at a W hotel. Staff were attentive and the whatever/whenever service never lets you down. Use the Acura SUV house car rather than a taxi- it's free! Valet parking is very expensive, $55 per night so try to find street parking if available.
