I had read about center and it sounded like it would be cool. It was nice to see and provided a great view of downtown and information about Birmingham's history. It wasn't by any means magnificent, but overall it was nice to see.

Vulcan is the Roman god of the forge, and he has become the icon of our city. Birmingham was founded on the steel industry; she was known as the "Magic City" because of the swiftness of the industry that grew and because all of the natural components for steel are located here in the area. A phenomonum that only happens in a handful of places around the world! He sits on top of Red Mountain, overlooking Birmingham. However, because he is dressed in Roman garb, he "moons" Homewood!

Our Vulcan was made for one of the World's Fairs and then made its way here. The park has endured many "upgrades" but most recently the statue and the park have been restored to an Art Deco-era flavor. While I was a kid in the 1980's, Vulcan held a torch that would glow green, meaning no traffic-related fatalities, or red, meaning there had been a traffic-related death that day. (Morbid and amusing, all at once!) Now he holds the traditional spear that is thrust up into the air, while his other hand rests on a hammer and anvil. The park is a beautiful spot, day or night. The building is kind of a modern interpretation of Art Deco and houses the info center, gift shop and small museum. They also have event venue space, and they are quickly becoming a hot place in the Ham to have parties or weddings!
Vulcan, god of the forge!
