Eclectic donut shop with the best donuts imaginable-The magic is in the hole! Dec 07, 2015
Ahh, what can I say about Voodoo? This place is THE place to go if you have a sweet tooth, and are craving some delicious doughnuts. This place is a well-known place around Portland Oregon, and elsewhere. It was featured on a few Travel show TV programs. The story is that this place was created when it's owners Trey and Kenneth AKA "Cat Daddy" were floating down a river on a raft and had an epiphany to open up a doughnut shop. Supposedly they didn't know how to make doughnuts so they went to Los Angeles to learn, and then came back and opened up what is now known as Voodoo Donut. This place is a very eclectic, one-of-a-kind place. There is really no other place like it. One of the locations, the walls are adorned with Kenny Rogers face. Many of the doughnuts have rather interesting names such as the the gay bar donut, the maple blazer blunt doughnut, the old dirty bastard doughnut, the tex-ass challenge donut, the dirty snowballs donut, the Arnold Palmer donut, the no name donut, the voodoo doll doughnut shaped like a voodoo doll that you can stab and red goo comes out, and the pot hole donut with a white line going down the middle.Another interesting thing about this donut shop is that they sell their own Voodoo Donut underwear among other things. The doughnuts have interesting toppings like Oreos, Butterfinger, fruit loops, marshmallows, bacon and so on. Another great thing about this place is that it performs weddings. The last time I was in there two people were getting married. All dressed up in their wedding attire and everything which was nice to watch. Voodoo Donut has two locations in Portland, and I have been to both. I prefer the downtown location, but the downside is the line to that one is usually horrendously long and parking is a lot harder to find downtown. Also, a little tip: Don't take your debit card to pay. They don't accept cards. They only accept cash.

This place is full of character. The people that work there usually look crazy, but in the coolest way. You can actually legally get married there! It's a very small space, and it's kind of darkly lit. It's way too crowded to eat in there, but there are nice places to take your food somewhere else. The doughnuts are really tasty, but more importantly, they're very entertaining and unique! Memorable doughnuts are: Cock-n-Balls, a penis-shaped doughnut filled with white cream; Cereal Doughnut, with Cap'n Crunch topped all over; Dirty Ol' Bastard, topped with peanut butter, crushed oreos, and just tons of chocolate. Then there's the gingerbread-shaped doughnut, with a pretzel stabbed in its heart, and it's filled with red jelly! Vegan doughnuts are also available. All the locals are in love with that place. It will show you what Portland is like.

Voodoo Doughnut is not only a great place to buy doughnuts but is a must see when you make a trip to Portland. Is a bit of a cultural experience when you go there.

Not only are the doughnuts good they have a very wide assortment of kind of dougnuts. They area famous for their maple bar with bacon on it but they also have lots of other interesting concoctions. With doughnuts like the "Triple Chocolate Penetration", the "Dirty Old Bastard", "Grape Ape", "The Memphis Mafia" and the "Dirty Snowball" how can you go wrong.

They area very creative in their flavors and surprisingly good. The Maple bar with bacon may sound weird but once you try it you will want it every time you go. I had the "Old dirty Bastard" which is a doughnut with Oreo cookie crumbles stuck on the doughnut with chocolate glaze and drizzled with peanut butter. It was probably my favorite. We had a delicious doughnut called "Mexican Hot Chocolate" that was like a cinamon doughnut covered with a powdering of cinamon and hot chocolate powder. A blueberry doughnut was also a favorite. We saw but did not get a doughnut with fruit loops on it.

When you get there there will be a long line but stick it out and have fun with it. Next time I go I will bring a piece of paper to write down a shopping list of doughnuts from the menu board as I am waiting in line as there are too many to chose from when you get up to the front of the line. Our server was a little grumpy and gave us some unfriendly service but the scene at Voodoo Doughnut is one to be embraced.
