Give a little of your time to help save the Turtles from extinction. Aug 11, 2008
If you've seen my profile already, then you'll know I work every year with a Volunteer Organisation called PRETOMA.

Punta Banco is the site of the longest monitored solitary nesting sites for Olive Ridley turtles in the world! PRETOMA have been working here for 12 continuous years now, helping to protect this and other turtle species that nest on Punta Banco's shores.

If you have sone time to give and would like to do something totally amazing with it, then you could apply to be one of their volunteers!

The nestong season runs from July 15th - December 15th this year, (2008), and you can stay for as little or as long as you want. All that is asked of you, is that you are of a reasonable level of fitness and can work well with others.

To apply, you need to go to PRETOMA's website, which is filled with more info on both Punta Banco and the other project sites PRETOMA currently run around Costa Rica. From there, you need to fill in a Project Participation Request Form with your dates of travel to and from Punta Banco.

PRETOMA can organise transfers from the airport in San Jose to Punta Banco, to include airport pickups and overnight hotel stays, all for a non-profit fee. They also generally organise your accomodation and all meals throughout your stay for a weekly fee, again non-profit.

Our work involves night patrols along the beach, searching for turtles and nests. Also, monitoring of the hatchery later in the season and releasing of the baby turtles, plus exhumations of nests that have hatched. It is amazing, awesome work and you will see some incredible sights and quite likely, make some wonderful new friends from all over the globe!

Here is the website address for you to check it out. I really cannot recommend this experience highly enough - you will come back with some really special, extraordinary memories of your time in Punta Banco, plus you will have helped to save some lives of a species that is critically endangered.

Any questions, either get in touch with me, or with PRETOMA directly. Their contact details are on the site.
