41 Zeestraat, Volendam, Netherlands
Volendams Museum - Coral jewelry, an indispensable part of the Volendam women's costume

Loads of touritst, but not in this museum May 15, 2016
The Volendams Museum is a museum about the history of Volendam. It is located near the harbour.

The museum can be visited in groups and with a guide.

On display are clothing, interiors of shops and houses and other typical objects from Volendam. In the main room there is a part of a botter so you can see the interior of the stil seaworthy ships.

One room is specially dedicated to walls decorated with sigar bands. All walls are coverd with sigar bands. They are placed in shapes to show the Netherlands (at the time without Flevoland as that province wasn't created yet), the royal family, etc.

This museum is realy an eye opener for people who are not all to familiar with Volendam, of who haven't visited the village in ages.

A nice and very affordable museum Mar 18, 2010
The museum is a 5 min walk from the harbor, and is adjacent to the VVV - the tourist information centre.

When entering the museum you are handed a printed guide, giving more information on what is displayed.

There are several rooms, showing tall dolls dressed in the typical Volendam costume from several periods and occasions.

I recognized the costume which was common clothes for the Volendam women when I was a child. It now seems amazing the people were still wearing the costume every day in the 1960's.

There was also a lot of information about the fishing business, with nice models of the Botters. Botters are an old dutch type of fishing vessel, which were commonly found on the former Zuiderzee (now Lake IJssel and Marken Lake) where Volendam is situated. It is a fast and elegant type of ship.

Also there were interiors of Volendam houses of the past - not even 100 years ago. Amazing that things have changed in such a fast way.
