Voi Vacation Guide

Voi is located in the southern part of Kenya in the Taita-Taveta District of Coast Province. It is a small town located on the A-109 highway between Mombasa and Nairobi and also on the railway between the two cities. Voi has a railway station on this railway. Voi is also located on the boundries of the famous tourist destination and wildlife refuge, Tsavo National Park. In addition to railroad and park work Voi also has sisal and pineapple farms nearby. Nearby are some Taita villages including Ikanga and Mkwachunyi.

The town center has shops, markets, a few hotels and lodges, general stores, and the train station. Most of the lodges are located in the edge of the town.

Local history claims the town's name came from Chief Kivoi, an infamous slave trader, who settled near the Voi river 400 years ago. The settlement grew as a trade post between the local Taitas, Arabs, and other tribes. Growth continued in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the Kenya-Uganda railway was constructed and the sisal and pineapple farms were established.
