Skopje is a strange city. It has a Turkish quarter (which was not even mentioned in my very detailed Macedonia guide, khm...), hundreds of statues, very ugly suburbs, soon-to-be-finished gorgeous and huge buildings, definitely an interesting mess.

But hey, they also have cable cars to get you on top of the mountain to get some amazing view of the city and surroundings. The ropeway is 3,5 kms long and it is a fun ride.

Once you get there, you are met with a gigantic cross which was built to serve as a memorial of 2,000 years of Christianity in Macedonia and the world. Some people think the cross is a monstrosity, but I disagree. The competition is too stiff in Skopje to make such assumptions :D

Very relaxing place, as long as the wind doesn't pick up.

Your review is great because it hints at the guidebook writer's desire to neglect Skopje's Ottoman heritage. I visited Skopje in about 1975 - after the great earthquake - and was surprised by how much of the 'Turkish' quarter still existed.
