At the mixing point between bar and club you find Vodka Bar a relatively chill and cool drinking and dancing establishment in Central Moscow. Vodka Bar is deceptively bigger than it seems from it's small entrance tucked away on a side street near Park Kulutry Metro Stop.

Once past face control (face control being the big dudes who decide if you're cool enough to enter), the mandatory coat check and if you're lucky the pretty blond giving away free shots of vodka (not good vodka, but free vodka) you find yourself walking in a rather cavernous dark room with high ceilings, thumping beats and a central bar surrounded by plenty of room for for dancing.

The dark bar of blue, red and black is decorated with various Soviet era nostalgia, such as big Soviet Star chandeliers, cycle and hammer mosaics around the base of the bar and of course multi-thousand dollar flat screen TVs playing the best of Russian and American cartoons or Russian movies. I think smurfs was on the night I was there.

A couple of steps above the main bar and dance area there's a open area near the window's filled with tables for those eating at the restaurant and those willing to pay the money to reserve a table. If you want to sit, call ahead and reserve a table because aside from those few tables it is a standing and dancing kind of joint.

If you decide you aren't in the mood for dancing well you can watch the go-go girls (and yes the occasional go-go boy) as they strut their stuff on raised platform behind the bar. In Moscow almost every decent bar or club has go-go girls, some clothed some not, so if that bothers you then you best stay home. At some point I'm told the entire central bar and stage are lit on fire and the go-go girls (sorry ladies just the girls) dance (sometimes naked) on the flaming stage.

If you get tired of watching the go-go girls and still not in the mood for dancing there are plenty of attractive and interesting people moving around the dance floor to keep you people watchers entertained. Your other option of course is to skip the dancing and just drink. If that's the case then you can choose from a bar full of different Vodkas ranging from a tremendous number of countries. Ruski Standard is always a good basic choice but the brave and tough go for the Nemiroff honey-chili Vodka...guaranteed to kick your ass! If you're drinking beer then you best enjoy Heineken, because that is all they serve. Prices aren't cheap but not outrageous for Moscow. A beer cost me around $5 each and vodka was about the same. Of course if you're feeling cheap and the blond is still giving away shots in the front just flirt a little and she might give you extra.

Vodka Bar does get busy but not till around midnight. If you are looking to hang out there all night with a group of people it might be worth it to reserve a table. You also might want to consider showing up a bit early and avoid a rigorous inspection by face control. If you get to the bar around 10 or 11 it will be pretty quite but face control will be much less annoying then if you show up at 1am and the place is already packed. I wouldn't wear trainers or look sloppy but aside from that there did not appear to be a dress code in effect. Remember though face control doesn't need any particular reason to deny you so look put together for your own good and guys don't show up in big group without any women.

As I said in the intro Vodka Bar is not a bar but it is not a club either it is a nice hybrid of where to two categories of night life meet. Sure there is dancing, thumping house music and a crowd full of beautiful people but even with all of that Vodka Bar still manages to feel more chill vibe then your average Russian club. Outfits are a less over the top and the overall mood of the Clientele doesn't have the frantic energy that you find in the larger dance clubs.

If you're in the mood to dance, but maybe also to talk, relax with friends, watch naked women dance on flame covered stage and just have a good time then Vodka Bar is worth a shot.
With friends at Vodka Bar.
