Völklingen Ironworks Reviews
iron & art Aug 13, 2011
Unesco World Heritage since 1994, the ironwork is an huge site to explore, showing different exhibitions 'The Celts. Druids. Princes. Warriors.' (til 21 august 2011, so hurry up, if this draws your interest), 'Mel Ramos. 50 Years of PopArt' til 8 January 2012 and for me, the best and the reason i went 'Urban Art - Graffiti 21', which is nicely put in the Blower hall til 11 November.
not knowing, that you're allowed to circulate everywhere, that after wearing a blue helmet, i could climb up ( there are stairs, but it feels like climbing up) to the blast furnaces, it was a mind-blowing experience!!! wow, 27 meters are that high?! you can walk on the plate-form and admire the incredible view, how nature is getting back his territory, just check out my pictures and you'll understand! btw, if you are a passionate photographer like me, you'll stay a while there;)
since, there isn't any guard on the plate-form, i went up some stairs, which weren't conceived for visitors, but hey, the door was wide open, there was no prohibition sign, when i noticed some rusty holes and a light detachment of the grid and looked down( again, 30 meters is so freaking high, if there is only rusty grid who separates you from that much space) it made me laugh, not panic, so i returned to the plate-form, extremely vigilant where i put my feet and hands.
besides art & history exhibitions, there is a whole info tour, about iron production, fire and ice, many movies show you about daily life of the miners, huh, it hurts my lungs by watching it. all this dust, all this noise, i mean, their physical condition must be appalling( sorry, the nurse in me speaking:D )
and then, there was this incredible smell, this is something really weird and personal, so be gentle, but the smell of used oil in the machine room, i love it! it reminds me of my grandfather's garage!
and it is not expensive at all, you get a lot for 12 euros( 10, if you're a student) and if this is still too much for you, Tuesday afternoons after 3pm, it's free! but be warned, you'll have only 4 hours til closure:)
