Another one of those cheap airlines... Apr 30, 2011
Viva Aerobus is one of those "cheap" airlines, like Ryanair or Easyjet, so with that in mind you know what to expect.

They are by far the lowest cost airline in Mexico, far cheaper than Interjet or Volaris, the other two airlines of its kind. Sometimes they got super great deals, like round trips within Mexico for less than 100 bucks.

But, as you can expect, the service isn't that good at all. If you need to document luggage, expect BIG lines in the airport, so you need to arrive about 2 hrs in advance before your flight. They won't give you anything for free inside the plane, you need to pay even for a cup of water.

They have the most inconvenient flight times and dates, so forget about making connections. It just won't work unless you want to spend all day in the airport. Flights are delayed most times, on my last flight to Chihuahua the flight was delayed for 9 hrs (!) and all that we got was a free sandwich and a small coke. They won't refund your money even if the flight won't leave on the same day, all you can get is a change of flight. They won't pay for hotel, taxi or meals if you have to spend an extra night because your flight didn't depart.

They don't assign any seat so, if you book in this airline make sure you pay for the "VIP" pass, that way you will have preferent boarding and will be able to choose better seats. Sometimes I've been the first to board the plane, that is very nice. I also like very much about these planes that they have two entrances/exits. That makes boarding and leaving the plane easier.

The best thing when travelling with this airline is to use their "Viva Light" deal as the prices can be a real bargain, and you only need to print your boarding passes online and they limit your luggage to up to two pieces of 55x40x20 cms and 10 kgs total. Not a big deal if you are travelling for a short time or during the summer.

One more thing is that they offer discounts on many bus lines with the purchase of your plane ticket, so if you need to travel by bus to a city nearby of your plane destination, simply take their bus service to the central bus station and ask for the discount. You can look for the destinations available in an info brochure on board.

This airline might work for you if you are not in a hurry, and if you are travelling with just a small bag. If you buy your tickets with enough time in advance or during one of their specials it can save you a lot of money.
