Unique, off the beaten path, pilgrimage site Feb 16, 2013
Allahabad is not far from Varanasi, and unlike the more famous pilgrim site, it is less visited by foreign visitors. The place continually attracts a steady amount of domestic pilgrims and tourists every year though. Every twelve years, the Kumbh mela takes place here – a religious pilgrimage in honour of the divine nectar which was said to have been dropped here. Apart from this event, the site is considered holy because it is where the holy Ganges and Yamuna rivers meet (together with the mystical third river, the Saraswati). Visiting this place is a bit like stepping into a time warp; there are so many pilgrims bathing and worshipping here that it is easy to imagine that scene has always been the same since time immemorial. Boat rides are available, but bathing in the waters and visiting some of the local temples is sufficient. Police officers are always around at key areas, so if you get into trouble, assistance is available. It’s quite easy to get your bearings here though, but if you are travelling in a group (especially with children), note that it can be easy to lose each other in the crowds. A must-see place for Hindus, and for the adventurers who wish to see something a bit less commercial and obvious than Varanasi.
