Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Richmond Reviews
A wonderful art museum and all for free. Jun 24, 2010
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is the major art museum in Virginia and a leading American art museum. The collections span all periods and styles of art from ancient to 21st Century, with an emphasis on American and European decorative arts. The museum was founded in 1936 and has continuously expanded since. The newest wing and gallery space was opened in May 2010. The museum is operated by the state of Virginia and admission is free.
One of VMFA's most noted collections is Fabergé Decorative Objects, which includes five Russian Imperial Easter Eggs. (The largest collection of Fabergé Eggs outside Russia.) Other significant collections include Art Nouveau and Art Deco decorative arts, Tiffany, South Asian Art, and Mid to Late 20th Century Art.
VMFA frequently hosts special and traveling themed exhibits. We've seen exhibits on Egyptian Art and on Tiffany Glass. (There is a charge for admission to special exhibits.)
Photography is permitted in the general collections. A must when visiting Richmond!
