The Start of Advent Celebrations - Antigua Guatemala Sep 21, 2013
Antigua, Guatemala is simply a genie, in the bottle that keeps coming out. Guatemalans seem to love to celebrate and the Roman Catholic church joins in with its mixture of Mayan and Christian rituals. .
The first Sunday of Advent features fireworks, over and over with parades. It starts on the prior Saturday afternoon with stilted effigies of the wise men, roaming the streets.
Sunday afternoon the crowds came and congregated in Parque Centrale. It was obvious that something was going to happen as the fireworks intensified.
At around 3:30pm.....the church doors opened and Mayans poured out in their finest traditional garb. Banners heralded their favorite saints, with emphasis being placed on the Virgin Mary.
150 foot long rolls of firecrackers were placed at each end of the street. A solitary drummer and flutist led the parade...and the colors were magnificent.
When all were out of the church the firecrackers were lit and the roar of sounds and smoke started the parade.
The largest float was hand carried ...was quite heavy..and was carried with a side to side pronounced swagger.
The photos have to illustrate the celebrations and air of excitement..my words cannot. Was like a pagan Christian celebration.
