Violet Santa Monica Reviews
Oct 14, 2007
i recently went back to this restaurant on a saturday night to check out the rest of their menu. i have been here previously on a sunday night. (violet has a tasting menu for a fixed price on sunday nights. the tasting menu changes each time. i did review that dining experience back in january on citysearch and is reprinted below.) but, every other night, including last night's experience, violet has the regular menu.
everything is tapas style -- small servings and meant to be shared.
i decided to be "good" and just have the chopped salad. it was pretty good: lettuce, garbanzo beans, slices of prosciutto, tomato, some soft cheese.
and because i was "good", i rewarded myself with something decadent -- the baked macaroni, a.k.a. mac and cheese. this was very good. i love the crispy baked top layer. inside, the gruyere cheese just melted and was so decadent. there is also some ham inside. mmmmmmmmmm.....
i don't eat the cow but my friend does, who claims that the steak was very good.
my only gripe about violet is that while the tasting menu on sundays is a really good deal, the regular menu is not. it is pretty expensive. for example, the small chopped salad is $9.50 and the steak (with 4 pieces) is $19! otherwise, this place is good.
here is my review of the sunday tasting menu on citysearch back in january 2007:
good mac and cheese 01/26/2007 Posted by pinays
i went for the first time on a sunday and the chef prepares a prix fixe menu for $25 and for $10, you get all you can drink wine. btw, all the servings are small (or, i guess, just right -- i keep on forgetting that supersizing does not make regular meals "small"). when i went, diners had the following choices: 1) cauliflower soup or a salad with goat cheese; 2) risotto with asparagus/serrano ham or swordfish; 3) cheese plate or apple tart a la mode. i had the soup, which was ok (the salad was aabout a size of a half dollar!). i had the swordfish, which i thought was dry. my friend who had the risotto loved it. i had the apple tart, which was pretty good. we also ordered an extra mac and cheese, which i enjoyed! would i go back? sure, the price is affordable and the all you can drink wine is a plus. just beware that there are hits and misses with the food.
