Vimy Ridge - National Historic Site of Canada Reviews
Impressive memorial dedicated to Canadian losses in World War I Apr 15, 2012
This memorial is one of the most touching ones I have ever seen so far. Not only the memorial itself, also the care being taken of the surrounding area makes it so special to a visitor.
More than 90 years ago a bloody chapter of European history was written on the battlefields of Flanders where German troups fought against French, British, Australian, Indian, Canadian and North African troups. The battlefields are still visible by hundreds of grenade craters in the surrounding area. Nowadays there are so many artillery shells right undereath the lawn which is protected by electric fences blocking a direct entry which might cause explosions of non-detonated grenades. Therefore the Canadian government, to whom the sight was given, uses sheep to cut/eat the lawn in order not to risk any human lives.
The main memorial consists of a huge white sculpture showing the grief and pain the War caused. Inscriptions around the memorial remember all the 11.000 Canadian names of soldiers losing their lives for the British Crown in those days.
This strategical ridge was formerly occupied by the Allies and then taken by the Germans in a bloody fight. Canadian troups were about to reconquer the ridge overlooking the surrounding area. It was tried several times to get it back but basically not successful.
In the battle starting at the 9th of April Canadian troups successfully took the ridge from the Germans but 11.000 human losses had to be bewailed.
Not far away from the main sight there is also a reconstructed trench system located with plenty of craters, as well as some Canadian cemetaries.
All in all the place provides a very tragic atmosphere of an incident the majority of people nowaydays aren't informed about.
Luckily history is well preserved there by that memorial and also the information centers.
