Your Own Private Residence with All the Modern Ammenities Nov 17, 2009
On a short trip to Nicaragua in May of 2009, we decided to spend a couple of days in San Juan del Sur. This was not our first trip to San Juan, but it would be the first time we would be spending the night in this town. We left Managua not knowing where we would stay that night. A friend had mentioned that he had stayed here before and really liked it. We drove around once we arrived in San Juan checking out various hotels, but either they were booked or we didn't like the accomodations offered. We set out to find this place.

This hotel is located on the hills overlooking San Juan and away from the town. The entrance road for the hotel is on the main road into and out of town (Carretera San Juan del Sur). The property is situated down a twisty, but well made and paved road. It is very dark at night and there are no street lights along this road. However, it seemed safe and there is development - private residences are popping up on lots along this road. The location is nice because of the view it affords - spectacular, sweeping vista of the town and harbour below. However, if you're looking to be in town and next to the beach, look elsewhere. This hotel is pretty isolated and without transportation you won't be able to reach the town - it would be a long hike on foot and not recommended.

Luckily, they were not booked and we were able to get a room. When I say room, I'm actually refering to a villa. This resort feels like a private residence and a home. The villas are modern and spacious. We spent one night at this property, but really wanted to extend our stay!

The villas are split level, you enter on a landing between the first and second floors. There were two full bedrooms in ours, and we chose the room on the top floor. It had a balcony which inlcuded a great view of the town below. The decor is kind of a simple, latin-flavoured (dark wood, wrought iron, neutral fabrics), coastal mix. It's very pleasant.

Also included are a full kitchen and dining area, and a living room/den with a sofa and t.v. and vcr/dvd player. Dvds and tapes are available at the resort's front office. Lots of windows let in plenty of natrual light during the day, but are slightly tinted. In the den area, a door opens off to a patio containing a couple of rocking chairs and small tables. Nice to sit on the patio at night and watch the sky (although a hammock would be really nice), drinking some rum or wine.

The further away from the front office/lodge your room, the higher on the hill you are, thus a better view. We asked for a villa that was higher on the property so that we could take advantage of the views. The only downside is that it is much easier to use your own vehicle to motor around the resort or you could call for service from the front desk. The roads are steep and although there are paths throughout the resort, it's rather maze like and can take a long time to walk from point a to point b. Again, if you don't have personal transportation, I don't think that this resort would be the best choice.

As I mentioned, the villas are spacious. The rates are fixed, and the staff is pretty relaxed. If a few additional friends joined to defray the costs, the staff normally turns their head - as long as the group isn't too raucous. There was a group in a villa down the hill from us that must have had about 7-8 people. This can definitely turn the villa into an excellent value. I also think that this place is a good hotel for families.

There is a restaurant, bar, and pool at this resort. We ate breakfast and thought that the food was decent, not outstanding but good. The pool is nice and there were always a few people in it or lounging on the chairs and loungers on the pool deck.

We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend this hotel to other travelers that are not necessarily on a budget. It's modern, spacious and comfortable. When we return to San Juan, we would return to this resort.

Villas de Palermo at San Juan del Sur Nov 04, 2008
The Villas at the Palermo Hotel and Resort in San Juan del Sur are set back in the hills overlook the beach a few miles away on a very lush, green property with a fantastic pool.

The Villas are a short walk from the main clubhouse/pool/restaurant and are really nicely appointed, two story units with beautiful patios overlooking the property and the ocean.

They come with fully equipped kitchens and there is plenty of local shopping which the handyman Rosco will take you to if you want. The rooms are large and comfortable and have walk in closets with a safe and very clean bathrooms.
