Hiking the Volcano Jan 12, 2016
When I arrived in Pucon, I got settled into my hostel, El Refugio, meet many people, went for a walk to the hidden waterfall and then went for a walk around this very cute village.

Later, that evening a tour guide come in to talk to the people that were going on the volcano hike the next day, at this time I was not interested. As I was listening to him talk about the hike, a little interested but didn't want to spend the money...then he said something about the ice axe, which I called "icey-picky-thingy" (I'm from SE Texas, we don't have mountains and snow), I decided I needed to go on that adventure 2 days later.

So, I ended up going on the climb. It was a nerve racking experience, cold but amazing. We were only able to go 7,700 ft because the wind was to strong to get to the very top.

To get down from the mountain we had a large plastic spoons looking piece to use to slide down the mountain...that was very fun.

After we get down from the mountain some of the guides invited us to their home later for a Chilean bbq. What a way to end an adventure you never knew you were going to take.

Hiking Villarrica Volcano Jan 29, 2011
The trek up and down Villarrica Volcano will take up a full day. This is the perfect activity for the adventure seeker and it helps if you are moderately fit. You can either hike up the entire way or take a ski lift past some of the most difficult terrain to trek. Unless you are used to high altitudes and hiking with a pack, I would suggest taking the ski lift. The views along the way make the cost worthwhile as you are presented with scenic overviews of the lakes and mountains. Do note that it is not always possible to see lava especially if it is windy as sulfuric fumes will be blowing around and will make it impossible to reach the edge of the volcano. All in all it was a rewarding experience that I highly recommend.

Climbing the Villarrica Volcano Apr 09, 2009
Climbing the Villarrica volcano is one of the popular things you can do in Pucon.

We left at 7 in the morning and after a short drive we started climbing at around 8 am. The climb itself was about 5 hours up and 2 hours to get down. The view at the summit was very impressive, as we had a clear day we could see many other mountains and volcano's in the surrounding area. It did smell/stink a lot up there because of the clouds of sulphur, even though there was quite a strong wind.

The climb itself isn't very difficult on a clear day (like mine). But you do have to be in good shape to be able to do it. You have to climb over 1400 meters through snow and ice to get to the summit, which proved to be quite difficult for some older people in the group (we had 1 guide for every 3 persons). The way down was a lot of fun, sliding through the snow was a very quick but also wet way to get down.

If you want a great view and test your stamina, then you should really do the climb (if the weather permits it). Be sure to take plenty of water with you, I had more than 3 liters with me and it was all gone when I got back. Be sure to take some chocolate, sandwiches or something else for the energy as well because you'll need it.

Oh, and don't be surprised if your feet still hurt 2 days later ;)

Ski Touring up an Active Volcano Oct 30, 2009
Of all the volcano's we skinned up this was the most accessable. It is very close to Pucon. We rented a car and could drive right to the snow line to begin our treck. There are other options for riding the Chairlift partway up the Volcano if you want to cheat. Ask the guys at Aguaventura in Pucon for conditions or for any rental gear you might need. They suggested crampons, but we were able to boot pack it up the last little bit. We could see the volcano puffing smoke the whole time as well.
