Village Retreat Yangshuo Reviews
Jul 19, 2011
The Yangshuo Village Retreat (formerly called Roman Holiday Pomelo Gardon Villa) was recently taken over by the same Belgian man and his Chinese wife that run the immensely popular Carpe Diem guesthouse located next door. It's a brand new hotel 20 minutes walking out of Yangshuo in Shi Ban Qiao Village, just north of Yangshuo. A walk from Yangshuo takes 20 minutes but gets you to a peaceful spot between the famous karst peaks. The Retreat offers a reasonably priced shuttle service between the hotel and Yangshuo, making this the perfect spot for those who want to get away from the hussle and bussle of the main town.
Rooms are spacious and very reasonably priced at 220 yuan. They come with ceiling to floor windows (including in the bathroom, which is also equipped with curtains), air conditioning, a seating corner and a balcony. The hotel has a few computers in the lobby and wifi Internet throughout the hotel (although upload speed can be quite slow). Each room also comes with the most comprehensive guide of tourist information I have ever come across in a hotel and the reception staff can arrange a wide range of activities for you, like tickets for the Yangshuo performances, rafting, hiking, massages, and much, much more. For 30 yuan you can rent a mountain bike for a day (which although brand new might come with some flaws ... hey, this is still China ... so check them before heading off).
The hotel runs a restaurant that offers a tasty selection of Western and Chinese food as well as a large selection of drinks (including Belgian beers). The staff speak English very well and are extremely helpful and enthusiastic. Maybe a bit too enthusiastic since I found three different persons trying to help me when arranging some tours, which created a bit of confusion and unnecessary repeating of my questions. ;-)
All in all a highly recommended place, especially for those who want a more quiet accommodation than the centre of Yangshuo.
