Village Des Tortues Soptom Gonfaron Reviews
Educational and Fun day out ! Sep 01, 2010
Le Village des tortues was originally set up in 1988 as a conservation project for Herman Tortoises, these tortoises appeared on the earth more than two million years ago... you might say they are living fossils, as the project expanded they took in more species such as chelonians, balkans and russian tortoises.
The village is located in a beautiful wooded area next to the village of Gonafron, where our armoured friends can feed, sleep and play we found out that it is better to visit in the mornings as the tortoises are alot more active then.
The village has been constructed as a round tour, there are numbered stations throughout where the different types of tortoise are individually introduced and explained on panels which are in three languages French, English and German. We soon found it a fascinating task to spot the different types in each enclosure.
There is also a tortoise clinic here for sick tortoises.
It is a lovely day out and you can learn alot from being here and whatever your pre conceptions may be I think it is worth a visit because even faint interest can turn into allure and delight at this wonderful place and you will soon be spending more time here than you might expect without becoming bored as there is just so much to see and learn.
It is definatly a non-commercial park and operates in such a way that is beneficial for the animals rather than the visitors. Prices are cheap 9 euros for adults and 6 for children between the ages of 5 and 16, under 5's are free.
In conclusion I think they are doing an amazing job here for the cute creatures and preserving and protecting them well, It is a quiet and tranquil environment and well worth a visit if you are in the south of France.
