Vilankulo Overview

Known as the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, Vilankulo is a small tropical coastal town with a relaxing and laid back feeling. It is a great spot for water sports including scuba diving, snorkeling, kite surfing, sailing, fishing and more. The beautiful and lively beaches offer stunning views of the islands across the turquoise waters of the channel which is full of white sand banks that are exposed during low tide.

In addition to tourism, the local economy relies on fishing and the colorful local fishing boats, or dhows, line the beach. Enjoy the frenzy of locals splitting up and buying the catch right on the beach when the dhows return. In town, have a walk through the market that has everything from fish and produce to local fabrics, handicrafts and more...

Getting There - 750 km from Maputo and 1300 km from Johannesburg, Vilanculos is easy to access either by road or by air. Two airlines connect Vilankulo to Johannesburg and Maputo on a daily basis, Inhambane and Kruger National Park a few times a week. By road, the EN1 connects Maputo to Vilankulo and is in very good condition. By public transport there are direct buses daily from Maputo as well as minibuses (chapas) traveling every day, all day long, and connect Vilanculos to all towns in Mozambique. Long, not always comfortable, but an interesting experience!

Accommodation ranges from backpackers and camping options to 5 star luxury lodges. During South African holidays everything tends to fill up and the town can be quite busy. The rest of the year Vilankulo remains fairly quiet and relaxed.
