Travelers to Vietnam still need a valid visa before entering the country. You can easily get the visa with your passport in the embassy in your country or in the third country with the price ranging from 20-45$.

Visitors from Asean countries, Japan...may visit Vietnam without a Visa.

I applied for my visa at the Vietnam Consulate in San Francisco, and it was fairly easy and quick. I mailed a copy of my passport and two photos with the application and got my visa back within 3 days. However, the consulate charged me $85. So, unless I was tricked by the consulate, the visa cost has obviously increased substantially

You can also get the visa upon your arrival at the airport (3 international airports in Vietnam). What you need in advance is a visa approval letter which you can obtain at any travel agency in Vietnam from $10-$20 depending on the agency that you work with. This is considered the best way because it is quick (2-3 business days to get the letter) and convenient too because you do not need to submit any papers or send any documents or photos.
