Vieques Overview

The island's name is a Spanish spelling of a Native American word said to mean "small island". It also has the nickname "Isla Nena", usually translated from the Spanish as "Little Girl Island", as a reference to its being perceived as Puerto Rico's little sister island. During the colonial period the British name was "Crab Island".

Most famous for its Bio luminescent bay, a wonderful alternative to going to Maldives :), Vieques is about an hour by ferry from the town of Fajardo. Ferries run several times a day and cost around $2 per person.

The last ferry back to Fajardo leave at 6 p.m. So if you want to visit the bio bay, you will have to spend the night in Vieques.
