Vienna Christmas Markets Mar 29, 2008
The atmosphere around Vienna during the christmas market season is amazing. Just browsing through the streets with market stands on either side, the smell of roast chesnuts and the warmth of the mulled spiced wine all combine to create a real thrill for all the senses. The crowds may be a bit much for some people but for most it's all a part of the attraction. With quaint little souveiner stands, christmas decoration stands, food stands, hot mulled wine stands, and festive ideas all around there is no excuse to be displeased with the variety of things on offer. Most are at reasonable prices too (with the exception of some specialised crafts - althoug expensive are unique and worth the money!)I would really recommend visiting early December and spending a few days just exploring all the markets available. What you miss the first time round you will definately see the second or third time. Entertainment is also provided in most cases with festive music, buskers or from some of the stands. A great excuse to get away from the norm christmas shopping and buy some unique christmas presents for family and friends!!

Hey guys,
I'm a huge fan of Christmasmarkets and here in Vienna we have quite a few! One of my favorites is the christmasmarket at Schönbrunn Palace. Its the setting that makes this market a real exeptional experience! You should go there in the late afternoon, right before the sun starts to sink and the whole court in front of the castle is dipped in this very special light that's a mixture of sunset and Christmas-lights! There are about 60 cottages selling a lot of christmas related handicrafts that make real great christmasgifts and the delicious food stands (including a chocolate spring and warm creps and waffles) make a wonderful aroma of gingerbread and other austrian specialities waft over the whole Christmasmarket. The entrance to the market is fee. There are a lot of activities for children, like cookie-baking and an interactive game and readings (unfortunately in German only). On Weekdays from 6 pm and on weekends from 2 pm there are Choirs and music groups performing Christmas Carols and Gospels - free of charge. If you come to Vienna during Christmastime this Christmasmarket a must have seen!!! |

I'd heard the thing to do at these markets is to drink some hot wine and take in the festivities. With this in mind, I sauntered up to the first… Vienna |

Day 15 we drove into Austria. We had a lovely snowball fight at one of our rest stops. On December 2006 being in Prague we decided to take one day to go and see Wien. Of course, it is not possible to get to know such city in one day, but we took our chances. It was cold and windy, so we had some hot wine and walked around the streets.…Christmas market right in the center. Everyone was walking and having fun, people drinking wine, eating pastry, dancing to the music, candies and fur-tree decorations sold everywhere. The city was full of life. We even took a ride at the ferris wheel. At the end of the day we visited… Classical City |
