You would never guess it by the name, but this memorial site was built to honour Queen Victoria! As Kolkata was the former capital of India during the British raj, and Victoria was Empress of India, it is a fitting place for such a memorial. The building looks like a mixture of British and Mughal architectural styles and its foundation stone was laid in 1906, five years after Victoria had passed away. Today, the site is famous for its museum and gardens. The museum contains many portraits of Victoria and Albert, information about the independence of India and many weapons to look at. I found it to be a bit of a heavy history lesson, but it is pretty comprehensive and easy to cherry-pick sections of the museum. The gardens are much more pleasing; the water gives a nice reflection of the memorial and the whole area feels very calm amidst the busy noises of Kolkata. Frustratingly, there are two lines – one for the ticket purchases and another to actually get in! This is India I guess! If you are in Kolkata, this site has to be a must-see.

The most amazing building in Calcutta..If you have Taj Mahal and you liked it, this is more or less comparable. For some reason it aint that famous but it is a master peice. Inside is a museum which shows all about the history of the British ruling over India. Dont miss it!!
