A turning point on the Civil War Sep 02, 2012
The Vicksburg National Military Park is a really interesting place to visit for those who want to see the site of one of the most important battles of the Civil War. The control of Vicksburg was considered vital by both Confederates and Unionists, as it was essential to the transport of goods and weapons by the Mississippi river. The victories at Vicksburg and later Port Hudson, gave the Union control of the river, which remained until the end of the war.

The Park features a number of memorials, statues and marked locations of important moments during the Vicksburg campaign. If you are really into Civil War history, you can probably look into more detail about these sites, but if like me, you are only an amateur, maybe you will enjoy more just the major memorial buildings. One very interesting thing to see is the USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum, sunk by the Confederates in the Yazoo river. The Vicksburg national Cemetery is also inside the park.
