Too modern even if it was impressively restored Apr 06, 2011
Although the cathedral dates from the mid sixteenth century, it was heavily bombed during the second World War. While the subsequent restoration efforts gave Vicenza its cathedral back, the effect was definitely lost. The façade is still pretty and imposing enough, but the main body of the building just looks like a modern and uninspiring collection of brick-work. Despite the new feeling inside, the cathedral is nicely decorated as much as it can be. I remember seeing some artwork that was from the medieval period. Overall though, the chapels and main altar still give off that new feeling and without the atmosphere that that older churches evoke. Worth popping into for sure but don’t expect some mega sight!
